Monterey Bay Internet File Sharing Setup

Windows 95 and 98 include a mechanism that allows you to share files across computers. These instructions explain how you can use this mechanism to update your web pages on your Monterey Bay Internet account.

Before we begin, a point must be stressed, Monterey Bay Internet backs up user files for disaster recovery only. By disaster we mean, server crashes, fires and similar; not "I accidentally erased a file, can you get it back for me?". You alone are responsible for backups of your own files; do not have the only copy of your webpage be on our servers.

Note also that this is an unsupported feature, and if you have trouble accessing it suddenly, it probably means we are working on it. If you continue to have the problem, do not call our office. The staff probably will not be able to answer questions concerning this service. Instead, please send email with any problems you are having to support@mbay.net.

Now that that is covered, let us begin. First thing you need is a fully configured connection to Monterey Bay Internet. If you do not have this, please check out our Windows 95 setup instructions. Second we need to make sure you have the appropriate drivers for file sharing installed. To do this, go to your Start Menu, then select Settings... Control Panel, then find and double click on the Network icon. You should then be shown a list of installed components. Make sure that "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks" are listed. If not, you can add "Client for Microsoft..." by clicking Add, then Client, then select Microsoft and double click on "Client for Microsoft Networks"; to add "File and printer...", click on Add, then Service, then select Microsoft and double click on "File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks".

Now assuming that you have or have added these two items, and that you are once again looking at the list of installed components, the next thing to check for is the Primary Network Logon; make sure this reads "Client for Microsoft Networks"; if not, select "Client for Microsoft Networks" from the pull-down list. From here, you should click a button or tab labeled "Identification". Under "Computer name" place your username and under "Workgroup" place MBAYNET (this one time leave out the period), you can leave Computer Description blank.

Finally, click on OK. Your computer may then ask for windows95 or 98 CD or Disks; if asked, supply them and then let it reboot your computer. Once it has restarted, connect up to the internet, then select the Start menu again, and then Run, and type in '\\OTTER\ftp\pub\mbay\Win95-NT\' (without the ''s of course). If you followed all the instructions, and are connected to the internet, a folder should pop up, with some files in it, double click on File Sharing Setup.exe. It will then run and prompt you for some information. Fill in the appropriate info, finish the setup, and allow it to reboot your computer.

Now you have file sharing set up. To access your Monterey Bay Internet space, double click on the shortcut on your desktop labeled "Home Directory..." and you should see all your web servers, your public_html directory and any files you have on our servers, you can then drag and drop like you would any other windows folder.

Another side effect of this, is that you can now set your computer's clock off our servers (which are updated automatically by national time service). To do this simply go to Start... Run again, and type in 'net time \\otter /set /yes'. You can also access our anonymous ftp server by double clicking on the "Public FTP Server..." shortcut that should be on your desktop.

If you have any questions or problems with the system, please email support@mbay.net.
