Macintosh MacPPP Configuration

To use these instructions, you will need:

When your MBAY.NET account is set up and active, you are ready to proceed to step 1.

Step 1: Select and Configure your TCP/IP Stack

If you have the MacTCP Control Panel, follow the instructions under Step 1A.

If you have the TCP/IP Control Panel (Open Transport), go to Step 1B.

Step 1A: Configure the MacTCP Control Panel

Go to the (Apple) Menu, select Control Panels, and then MacTCP. You will get the control panel shown below.

[MacTCP Control Panel]

Click on "PPP" once, so it is selected as above. Ignore the IP Address box, and click on More.... The following window will appear.

[MacTCP Config Panel]

Select Server in the Obtain Address section, and then enter the Domain Name Server Information EXACTLY as above. Notice that there is single '.' (period) in the left box of the second and third lines.

IGNORE the Gateway and IP Address settings and click OK. Make sure "PPP" is still selected, then close the MacTCP Control Panel. Reboot if you are told to, then Continue with Step 2.

Step 1B: Configure the TCP/IP Control Panel

Go to the (Apple) Menu, select Control Panels, and then TCP/IP. You will get the control panel shown below.

[TCP/IP Control Panel]

Change the settings on your TCP/IP Control Panel so that it matches this one EXACTLY. Do not "Select Hosts File..." or change any of the settings under "Options...". When you have made the changes, close the control panel and save the changes when asked. Continue with Step 2.

Step 2: Configure the ConfigPPP Control Panel

Go to the (Apple) Menu, select Control Panels, and then ConfigPPP. You will get the control panel shown below.

[MacPPP Control Panel]

Select New..., and enter MBAY.NET for the PPP Server Name. Set all of the other options on this window as above, and then select Config.... You will get the window below.

[MacPPP Config Panel]

Enter the phone number for your area:

  • 264-2791 for Monterey Peninsula users
  • 540-2791 for Salinas Valley users

If you have a 28.8 (or faster) modem, you can set the Port Speed to 57600 or 115200, if your Mac will support it. Leave the Modem Init blank unless you know a good string for your specific type of modem. Make sure the other settings are the same as above, and press Authentication..., to get the following window:

    [MacPPP Authentication Panel]

Enter YOUR username (it is between 2 and 8 characters, all lower case) in the Auth. ID box. You may enter your password if you are the only person that has access to your computer. Remember that your password is case sensitive as well.

Press OK to close the Authentication window, then OK again to close the Config window, and then close the main ConfigPPP window.

Step 3: Connecting to the Internet

You are now ready to connect to the Internet. To test the connection, go back to the ConfigPPP Control Panel, and select "Open". A status window will appear to show you the progress of the connection, and you will hear your modem dial the phone if the speaker is turned on. In a few seconds, it will connect, and you will get a "Login Succeeded" message from the server. Press OK, and your ConfigPPP window should look like this:

    [Connected MacPPP Control Panel]

Not the PPP UP in the top corner. You are now on the Internet! You can now close the ConfigPPP window, and start Netscape, Mosaic, Eudora, Fetch, or any other Internet application.

When you are ready to disconnect, just bring the PPP Control Panel back up, click Close, and you will be disconnected from the Internet. As a courtesy to other users, please disconnect when you are not actively using your connection.

In the future, you can open your Internet connection by simply starting any Internet application. Your Macintosh will automatically start PPP and connect to us.

If you have any questions, please send email to "support@mbay.net".
