Monterey Bay Internet
Windows 3.1 IE Dialer Configuration

Note: If you are looking for email setup instructions or an email program, we provide an installation of Qualcomm's popular Eudora Light software that will configure itself for your mbay.net account, at the page http://www.mbay.net/docs/eudora.html. This still requires a configured dialer, as described below.

To use these instructions, you will need:

When your account is set up and active, you are ready to proceed to step 1.

Step 1: Run the Installation Program

Put your MBAY.NET Internet Explorer disk into your floppy drive, and select Run from the File menu of the Program Manager.

[File/Run on Program Manager]

A window will appear asking for a Command Line to execute. Enter "A:\SETUP", and press the OK button. On some older computers with two floppy drives, you may need to enter "B:\SETUP" instead to access the correct drive.

[File/Run on Program Manager]

The installation program will now run.

Step 2: Installing the Software

After a few seconds, a License window will appear, which you should read and confirm. You will then be asked for a path and program group in which to install the software. The defaults for these should work, so just accept them. Next, a window like this will appear:

[Complete/Custom Installation Selection]

Select "Complete". The software will now be installed. This will take a few minutes.

Step 3: Finding and configuring your modem

The setup program will now locate and configure your modem. You should be able to have it automatically find your modem. If your modem is not one of the listed types, just select the appropriate Standard Modem Type.

After installing your modem, you will be asked to restart your computer. You MUST restart your computer now.

Step 4: Creating the MBAY.NET Connection

After rebooting and restarting windows, you should have a new program group called "Microsoft Internet Explorer" with three icons in it. Open the "Make New Connection" icon, and you will get this screen:

[Create New Connection Window]

Enter "MBAY.NET" for the connection name, and press OK, as above. Now, select the Program Manager group you want the new connection to appear in. The "Microsoft Internet Explorer" group is a good choice.

An icon shaped like the "Make New Connection" icon should be created in the selected program group. If it looks like DOS Box (a square) instead of a telephone, see the "Special Note" at the end of these instructions.

Next, you will get a "Connect To" window like this:

[Connect To]

Enter YOUR username (it is between 2 and 8 characters, all lower case), your password, and the apropriate telephone number:

Press Next, and enter our area code (408) and the apropriate telephone number:

  • 264-2791 for Monterey Peninsula users
  • 540-2791 for Salinas Valley users

Select Properties, and you will get a window like this:

    [General Properties]

Make sure your window looks like the one above. You may select "Start Internet Exploder when connected" if you wish. Next, select the Domain Name tab at the top, to configure your nameserver information:

[Domain Name: mbay.net, Pri DNS: 206.40.79.2, Sec DNS: 206.40.79.3]

Make sure your window looks EXACTLY like the one above, and select OK.

You will now be back at the "Connect To" window. Select Close, and save your changes.

Step 5: Connecting to the Internet

Now you are ready to connect to the Internet. Just double-click on the "MBAY.NET" connection icon, and your modem will dial and connect you to Monterey Bay Internet. You can also start any Internet application, and the dialer will connect automatically.

    [Connected to MBAY.NET]

You are now on the Internet! The speed will, of course, vary depending on the type of modem you have and the current line conditions. You can now minimize this window (if it didn't minimize automatically) and start Internet Explorer, Netscape, or any other Internet application.

When you are ready to disconnect from the Internet, just bring back the above window, click Disconnect, and you will be disconnected from the Internet. As a courtesy to other users, please disconnect when you are not actively using your connection.

    Special Note

This section only applies if the icon for the connection that you created in Step 4 appears as a square "DOS Box" icon instead of the telephone icon. This usually only occurs on machines that have been specially configured to start a program other than Windows automatically on startup, although occasionally a non-standard "WIN" command will cause it.

If this is the case, you must edit the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file and move the three "SET" commands that were added by the installer to the end of the file to a point immediately ABOVE the command that is "freezing" the autoexec.bat (possibly something like C:\WIN31\WIN, or MENU). These "SET" commands MUST be executed before windows loads.

If you are not sure how to do this, contact the person that configured your computer, as this is a non-standard configuration. After correcting the autoexec.bat file, reboot the computer and proceed from Step 4.

If you have any other questions, please send email to "support@mbay.net", or call our technical support line at 642-6100 during normal business hours.
