Monterey Bay Internet Windows 95/98 Configuration
Note: If you are currently able to download and install software from the
Internet, you should skip these instructions and install our Connection
Manager software at http://www.mbay.net/docs/
on the computer you wish to connect to the Internet. This file is small
enough to put on a floppy disk and carry to the machine requiring Net access
if necessary. If you do choose to follow these directions, we still recommend
downloading the Connection Manager once you get online.
If you are looking for email setup instructions or an email program, we
provide an installation of Qualcomm's popular Eudora Light software that will
configure itself for your mbay.net account, also available at the Documentation
page above. This still requires a configured intrenet dialer, either configured
using the Connection Manager, or by following the instructions below.
To use these instructions, you will need:
- An account with Monterey Bay Internet
- Your Monterey Bay Internet Username (2-8 characters, for example, "bgates")
- Your password (5-8 characters, for example, "1mAg33k")
- Your Windows 95 or 98 Installation CD or floppy disks may be required.
When your account is set up and active, you are ready to proceed to step 1.
Step 1: Verify that Dial-up Networking is Installed
Press the
button, select Settings..., and then Control Panel. Double-click
the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select the Windows Setup tab, then
click on the Communications option and press Details....
If the Dial-up Networking line is selected (has a check by it), close
the window and go on to Step 2. If it is not selected, select it and click
OK, and then OK on the Install/Remove Programs window. Windows
will attempt to install the needed drivers. When the installation is
completed, do not reboot your computer.
Step 2: Verify that the TCP/IP Protocol is Installed
Press the
button, select Settings..., and then Control Panel, and then
Double-click the Network icon. You'll see a dialog box like this:
Make sure the Configuration tab is selected, as above. If both
Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are listed (as in the picture),
go to step 3. Don't worry if there are other items that look different.
If you need to install the Dial-Up Adapter, click the Add...
button, double-click Adapter, then scroll down the list on the left
side until you can select Microsoft. Choose the Dial-Up Adapter
on the right, and click OK.
If you need to install TCP/IP, click the Add... button,
double-click Protocol, then select Microsoft, then TCP/IP,
and click OK.
Now your Network dialog box should contain both Dial-Up Adapter
and TCP/IP. Select the adapter, click Properties...,
Bindings, and make sure the TCP/IP box is checked. Click OK,
and Windows will install . Click on the OK button, and windows will
install the new components and reboot your computer.
Step 3: Create the Dialup Connection
Open up My Computer (on the desktop) and double-click the Dial-Up
Networking icon. Double-click the Make New Connection icon. This
will walk you through the Make New Connection wizard. If you just
installed the dialup adapter, it may take your directly to the wizard.
Enter "Monterey Bay Internet" for the name of the computer. Your modem should
already be selected. The screen should look something like this:
Press Next, and enter our area code (831) and the apropriate telephone number:
264-2791 for Monterey Peninsula users
540-2791 for Salinas Valley users
Please see our Documentation Page
for other dialup numbers.
Press Next, and then "Finish" to finish setting up the connection.
Step 4: Edit the Connection Properties
Click the RIGHT mouse button over the newly-created "Monterey Bay Internet"
icon and choose Properties.... You will get a dialog box similar to
this one, although the "Server Type" might be a tab at the top if you have
a newer version of Windows 95 or Windows 98:
Select "Server Type", and you will get a screen like the one below.
Uncheck all of the "Advanced Options", and all but TCP/IP under "Allowed
Network Protocols", so it looks EXACTLY like the picture below:
Click OK to close both windows. Now you're ready to go on
the Internet!
Step 5: Logging in and Getting Connected
Double-click your session icon that you recently made. You'll get the
Connect To dialog, which looks like this:
The "Save Password" box may be ghosted. Enter YOUR username and password.
The username MUST be all lower case, 8 or fewer characters, and the
password MUST be as you chose it, probably in lower case. Press "Connect".
Your modem should dial and in a few seconds, you will be connected to our
server, and get a box like this:
You are now on the Internet! The speed will, of course, vary depending
on the type of modem you have and the current line conditions. You
can now minimize this window, and start Internet Explorer, Netscape,
or any other Internet application.
When you are ready to disconnect, just bring back the above window, and
click Disconnect, and you will be disconnected from the Internet.
As a courtesy to other users, please disconnect when you are not actively
using your connection.
If you have any questions, please send email to "support@mbay.net".
