Action and providence of God
A
personal way of praying
Some questions arise from the previous
document, The demands of worshiping God and its
consequences. Is there truly any action of God upon us? any
kind of "protection"? is this an individual
one? may God intervene in our lives? can we trust in his involvement in the events of our lives?
The answer to all these questions is Yes, and it is
called providence of God. But, how do we know this is true?
As in all religious matters the answer is
always the same: we believe this only by faith. There are no proofs, no
arguments; we simply believe that God did reveal his loving care of us, mainly
through the teachings of Jesus.
What science says
Science can not prove or deny the
existence of this continued action of God in the universe, and in us in
particular. Of those scientists who believe in God, most think that the present
action of God in the universe is minimal. For them, God created the initial
matter that evolved later on its own, according to the laws of nature, and
there is not any need of further action of God.
But science does not know everything (nor religion either); I personally think that there is more what science ignores than what it knows. Our vision of God and of his relationship with us is based on faith, not on science; science counts, but we are lead by faith, not by science. Faith tells us that God can do even more than we can understand; this is part of the essence of God. To have some idea about the God of the physicians and philosophers, you may click here.
The Bible attests the action of God
Although I have some reservations
regarding the truthfulness of the Bible, I do believe that the Bible contains
some revelation from God regarding his action in the universe, especially in
humankind. God is still working in this creation. Let me quote two verses taken
almost at random, among the countless available in the Bible.
