Is Jesus the necessary Mediator for mankind?
The
doctrine of salvation must be universal
If the question, Is
Jesus the necessary Mediator?
means that only through Jesus can human beings be saved,
the answer is no; God might have provided other means of salvation for
non-Christians. The title and functions of Mediator attributed to Jesus in the
New Testament, were posterior additions to the gospel
preached by Jesus; he never called himself Mediator or High Priest.
Traditional teachings have been
discriminatory
Traditional doctrine about salvation has
been very selective and discriminatory because it is for believers in Christ
only. Were this doctrine true, God would be cruel and unjust with those who,
without their fault, didn't know Jesus, condemning most of humankind to hell
and depriving them of sharing his glory.
God is the Creator of all human beings and
loves all his creatures; he is the final goal of all, so he might have provided
a way for all of them to be saved. A different plan would be simply absurd, not
a plan of God.
