"Revelations" outside Christianity (4)
Judaism,
Christianity, Islam, Hinduism - "Revelations" on the internet
It is a fact that God reveals himself in
different religions; that is, he may be experienced in different creeds, not
just in the Christian faith. It seems that not everybody is made for the
"Christian model," and God has wanted different ways for humans to
come to him.
Just at the beginning of Christianity,
Peter said: In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every
nation whoever fears him and works righteousness is accepted by him (Acts 10.34-35).
It seems like most members of any religion do not want to follow this through;
and Islam and Christianity are no exceptions.
All true religions are valid
All true religions of the living God are valid;
I am not talking about cults not centered in the living God. I do not dare to
say that the Christian faith is better. We are used to pondering the excellence
of Christian faith, but I think we have no right to consider other religious
faiths inferior to Christian faith.
The "supremacy" of any religion,
call it Muslim or Christian, is an act of arrogance and pretension. God accepts
all religious faiths.
And the person of Jesus?
The main problem we Christians face in
front of other religions is the person of Jesus, who is believed to be Lord for
all mankind, besides his roles as prophet, messiah, redeemer. Who is he? Is he
somebody "universal," that is, for everybody, for all human beings; a
kind of "generic," universal model for all religions; or is Jesus
only the prophet for Christians, as Muslims have Mohammed, or Buddhists have
Buddha?
We shouldn't hurry a "no"
answer. Probably we won't have the answer here. He might be the Prototype of
all mankind, from the beginning of human beings about 200,000 years, and for
the future; or he might not; we do not know.
Lordship of Jesus
Christian faith has traditionally believed
that the Lordship of Jesus is universal; but we may wonder if his Lordship is
limited to Christians. We do not have the answer to all questions of Christian
faith, and we do not have to, since any religion has some mystery and unknown.
But we must admit the fact that many human
beings worship and pray to the true God without Jesus; not just that, but
throughout the whole Old Testament, Yahveh was
worshipped and served without the need of Jesus.
What seems true to me is that we should
not "impose" the Christian pattern to everybody. God's views and
designs about mankind are not necessarily our view. Let us admit the fact.
