Paradoxes of Christian faith
Paradoxes are not contradictions, but they can not
be explained
Christian
faith, as any religious faith, is full of paradoxes. I'll deal here, in this
essay, with some of the Christian paradoxes. This document is, of course, not
exhaustive; I'll deal in particular with the paradoxes regarding the faith in
God.
Among
the several definitions of paradox, there is one which says that it is "a
seemingly contradictory statement that may nonetheless be true." This is
the approach of this essay.
Paradoxes
are "normal" and understandable
Religion,
which is by definition a world of faith, must include paradoxes, because it
deals with the supernatural, the out of reach for the human mind. Human beings who want to be religious, confront on one hand the
laws and facts of nature, and the conclusions of science; and, on the other
hand, the teachings or tenets of faith. Sometimes they seem contradictory.
The
human mind does not have the explanation for these paradoxes; if they could be
explained, then the mysteries of God would be at the same level as the human
mind, and God wouldn't be God but another limited creature.
