Everyone of us, and the universe, are in God

God, the Giver, not the Receiver

Note. The essay Presence of God in space or his presenceness may serve as a background of the present one.

The awareness that we are in God (as “inside” God although not physically), has an inconceivable meaning that may change our lives. God is so close to us that it is impossible that he does not know our actions and thoughts, and everything that happens in our lives. We may have an intimacy with God that is not comparable to any other intimacy we may have. This is simply marvelous!

God in the universe and the universe in God

In many of my writings I say that God is in the world, and that is true: God is in the universe; but his presence in the world is a consequence of the fact that the universe is in God. God does not come from “there” to “here,” to fill the universe; rather, the universe was created in God and exists in God.

The universe has a limit; at least, that is what most physicists think. The universe is self contained; the space is limited; galaxies and universes have a limited mass and space. God has not; his presence and his action is infinite and has no limit; the world is in God.

Our limited knowledge of God

We cannot explain how the world is in God, because our knowledge of God is very limited. Our intellect knows through senses; our ideas come from the perception of our senses. Our intellect understands by division and composition of concepts and ideas. This is also the way we know God, what is almost a dreadful contradiction, since there is nothing sensible in God, nor has he any composition or division. Thus we may realize how far our knowledge of God is from what he really is. With such knowledge of God so imperfect, it is difficult to say how the universe is in God.

Our mind understands God by an addition of qualities and properties, trying to form the most “perfect” concept of God; but God is not a sum of qualities. We say that he is infinite, but we are unable to know what infinite means. We are unable to intuit God at a glance, and we understand him only by composition of properties or qualities. What we think God is, is something that he is not.
